Older Markets Are Civic Infrastructure

Problem

Markets support livelihoods, daily shopping, and local services. Renewal policy needs to account for differences in use, governance, and safety.

Context

The Kaohsiung market-renewal hearing took place on 11 October 2024 with city departments, academic experts, and market representatives.

My Role

I contributed to market-governance research, renewal research, and hearing work. The forum was a shared effort, not my individual outcome.

Constraints

Ownership, use, building conditions, and community needs vary across markets. One renewal model cannot stand for all, and discussion does not prove adoption.

Approach

The discussion started from market classifications and use conditions, bringing market representatives, experts, and responsible agencies into the same forum.

System

Market conditions → governance and use questions → stakeholder input → renewal options.

Outcome

The hearing created a record for future discussion on market governance and renewal. Shared discussion or later government action is not attributed to me.
